The group’s Korean name is 이달의 소녀,
romanized as “Idalui Sonyeo”.
The root meaning is "Girl of the Month".
The group is also known as LOONA, often stylized as LOOΠΔ,
which is their official English and international name.

Before the selection of the members, LOONA’s concept was
first devised by their former A&R Director, Jaden Jeong.
Prior to being introduced to Polaris Entertainment,
BlockBerry Creative’s parent company, Jaden Jeong already
had the “Girl of the Month” Project planned. His goal with
LOONA’s project was not just to have a complete group, but
also to have an identity and fandom. In 2014, plans were
made to establish a new agency consisting of a “dream
team” in the industry. This agency would later become
BlockBerry Creative in early 2016, BlockBerry Creative is
one of three labels under Levite United (리바이트 유나이티드), along
with its parent Polaris Entertainment and New Type ENT.
In order to select the members of LOONA, trainees were
split into groups based on skill level. When the time came to
choose a new member, each group would send a
representative to compete for the spot. These
representatives would be judged on group evaluations,
including singing and a choreography test. Additionally, the
trainees’ character and personality were also considered.
After each competition, the girls were ranked. The
first-ranked girl would become a member while the second-
and third-ranked could choose different teams to join.

LOONA officially made their group debut in 2018 under
the label Blockberry Creative. The members include
Heejin, Hyunjin, Haseul, Vivi, Yeojin, Kim Lip, Jinsoul,
Choerry, Yves, Chuu, Gowon, Olivia Hye. However, this
began through an 18 month pre-debut project. For this
project, a girl would be introduced through a single music
video each month. This is understood through LOONA’s
Korean name: 이달의 소녀 (Idaleh Sonyeo), which translates to
“Girl of the Month.” Through these music videos, each
girl was given a designated color and animal, creating a
zodiac-inspired concept that is continually represented
throughout their music videos. Every single teaser and
music video has its own lore, storyline, and connection
between each other. Which would all be planned to
create the LOONAVERSE.

The LOOΠΔVERSE is the fictional universe where the members of
LOONA live. It is depicted through their music videos and teasers.
Its existence was officially announced on April 26, 2017, but was
given its name on May 22 of the same year. since the lore of the
LOONAVERSE can be interpreted in many different ways, many
Orbits have begun to theorize what the music videos entail, and
how each member's story intertwines with each other.

A möbius strip is when a single plane is twisted and
connected to itself. To make it more simple, think of a strip
of paper. you have two ends of the strip of paper. you can
connect the two ends to make a loop. Or you can twist the
paper and then connect the two ends. This is a möbius
strip. Though it may not seems like much, but by
connecting the two ends of the strip of paper with a single
twist in it, you have created a single-sided paper. Try taking
a marker and draw a line on the strip, following the curves
of the paper. You will end up in the same place you started,
because you have essentially created a one-sided object
that is both fluid and infinite.

The LOONAVERSE is a universe that exists on a möbius strip. If
you were to draw a picture of a möbius strip, you'd give it three
sides. One side in the back, one in the front, and another where the
twist occurs. These are the dimensions in the LOONAVERSE. The
dimensions of LOONAVERSE consist of 3 worlds, which are Earth,
Middle Earth, and Eden. The members of LOONA 1/3 reside on
earth and portray realistic girls that can be found on streets or at
schools. ODD EYE CIRCLE lives between earth and space, aka the
middle earth. They display changing and mutative characteristics
while suggesting love should be taken control of instead of being
passive. Lastly, yyxy inhabit a 'utopia', known as 'Edenism', beyond
earth and the middle earth. They decide to escape their 'Eden' in
order to discover themselves.
